I remember reading somewhere that public reaction was somewhat somber and muted, nothing like the famous early WW1 enthusiasm (although for all I know, that itself may be exaggerated in popular history). Does anyone have some good sources?

They viewed their aggression as a response to an "overreaching" Treaty of Versailles and believed they were relitigating World War I with more favorable results. Propaganda and restriction of outside information convinced most Germans they were undeniably winning the war and on the verge of taking over Europe far after 1941. Moreover, Germany was obligated by treaty to declare war on Japan's enemies and most Germans probably felt honor-bound to abide by the alliance once Japan declared war on the U.S.

Even if some Germans harbored pacifist feelings, it could be hard to find accurate data. Regardless of private reactions, disagreeing with the Reich was very dangerous to one's health. Undoubtedly all Germans knew by the end of 1941 that the Gestapo would quickly and brutally silence any dissension. If dissenters were not summarily executed, they were sent to concentration camps and were not heard from again until 1945, if ever.

The general thought was "well we really got them all back for the Treaty of Versailles and Alsace-Lorraine."

Though also like you said many were surprised it came to war and were used to Hitler getting what he wanted without conflict.

The enthusiasim for WWI is exaggerated. A whole number of of social historians have written papers showing that while there was a lot of enthusiasm for the war, it was nothing like it is in popular memory.

The crowds in Champ Elysse, etc did exist, but it was a) demographically largely (not exclusively) middle class people who supported the war and b) there were a lot of people outside of the crowds who were at most meh on the whole thing.
