I don't know what the standpoint of the current government is but the reason Turks didn't talk about it back then was cause of the after.effect of the Turkish war of Independence.
Ataturk wanted to build a secular nation with nationalistic tendencies rather than religious or "muh Turan" Enver/Soviet propaganda. And to do that they had to "forget" about the Armenian genocide cause of it leaving a bad stigmata that would ruin whatever plans the CHP had.

Hundreds of thousands of Armenians definitely died during forced marches through Eastern Anatolia and into the Syrian desert. These forced displacements were done in response to 1) uprisings in Eastern Anatolia by Armenian revolutionaries and 2) Ottoman fears that the Armenians would aid and abet Russian military forces, who were a major threat on the Eastern Front after the military disaster that was Sarikamish.

This has been seized upon by Turkish historians and the Turkish government, who often make really dry, technical arguments about the legal definition of genocide before playing down the level of human suffering that actually occurred.

If I had to form a judgment on it, I'd say that genocidal intent was, in all likelihood, present on the part of the Ottoman government.

The sequestering, under Ottoman law, of forcibly 'abandoned' Armenian property around a year after the forced marches hardly suggests that the state had innocent intentions. At the very least, it's safe to say that the government had set out to ethnically cleanse Eastern Anatolia on this basis.

And letting Kurdish irregulars (many of whom were little better than bandits) round up and march civilians through miles of difficult terrain with inadequate food, shelter and clothing is hardly the move of a government that isn't trying to murder its own people.
