My history professor has been bashing Britain for monopolizing Iran's oil fields and "paying the Iranians a fraction of what they're worth."

But here's what I don't get. Did Iran even have a means of extracting oil by themselves? Shouldn't they have been grateful for at least getting a portion of the money generated by the British extracting the oil, rather than having no one do it and getting virtually no money?

>being grateful for being colonized

When does the meme end?

Why does it matter if they had it at that time? It was prolly a matter of time when they would start it. If Equatorial Guinea can maintain 23k+ GDP with oil alone bit without basic infrastructure such as running watet then I fail to see why Iran would have been unable to pay someone to build it for them.
>>
>>2788743
Maybe not when they started but by the time they were nationalized they extracted oil on their own
>>
>>2788869
Wrong.
They had to hire Italians to come and work the machinery after they kicked out the Brits.

Letting people build oil extraction infrastructure in your country isn't colonization.
>>
should Iraq be grateful for this?

>U.S. and British oil companies will take over Iraq’s oil fields under a new Iraqi law written by the Bush Administration.

>Western energy giants such as Exxon and Shell will control Iraqi oil exploration for the next 30 years while keeping 75% of the profits. Let freedom reign!

>After the withdrawal of the British workers in the fall of 1951, the Iranians felt confident that they could easily hire non-British technicians to run the industry and then quickly train their own nationals to replace them. Unfortunately, this did not prove to be the case; the United States, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Pakistan, and West Germany all refused to make their technicians available to the nationalized Iranian industry. Only Italy agreed, demonstrating that most industrialized countries supported Britain over Iran in the nationalization dispute."

The Shah sold the rights and held shares in the company.

It is funny how you are grateful to your kangz but not grateful to your colonizers? Why is this?

Either go full commie and deride all oppressive regimes or be grateful to whatever conquistador or franco/anglo bourgeois gentleman dragged you country kicking and screaming into modernity.

Look up the oil contract licenses. It's an ubermeme.

Monopolizing the natural resources of another country is modernizing? No Reza Shah the farther of the shah that was deposed started the programme of modernization after being heavily influenced by ataturk of course that meant having to deal with Europeans but we all know everyone is after their own self interest so what credit really deserves going to anyone but the Shah for modernizing Iran
>>
>>2788940
So what I'm getting from this is that Iranians could have nationalized the oil fields and then just employed people from other countries to work them, so this puts fault on the British. However, the British made a contract with the Iranians to secure a flow of money to ensure rearmament funds and a high standard of living. So when the contract was breached by the nationalization of the oil fields, Britain's goals were in jeopardy, which would justify them blockading Abadan and having every other country except for Italy refuse to work on Iranian oil fields. Then the fault is on Iran. Is this right?
>>
You have to remember that Britain was desperate for oil imports before they found oil in the North Sea. And Iranian oil was huge for bongs.

Between 1945-50 the British Govt. received more in taxes from Anglo-Iranian Oil than Iran received in royalties.
Most of the share dividends went to the British Govt. Anglo-Irnian sold oil to the British navy at a discount.
US Secretary of State Dean Acheson criticized "the unusual and persistent stupidity of the
company and the British Government"
Aramco in Saudi Arabia made a 50-50 deal with the Saudis, but Anglo-Iranian in Iran resisted following suit until it was too late

Mosaddegh was kind of a meme, I don't know how western education has twisted it that he was the Persian Bernie Sanders. He was just another aristocrat butthurt the Qajars weren't still in power and governed as a paranoid autocrat, just like the Shah and later the IRI.

Quick rundown? You gave the impression you know a little about him

>Communists
> Deriding oppressive regimes

Pick one and only one senpai. Communism is inherently oppressive.

Reading about the struggle between him the Shah and Ayotallahs was interesting

Funny thing is that he actually defeated the Shah and only lost because the Ayotallahs who were sympathetic to him feared communism and his crackdowns so a general approached them for help while the Shah ran away with his wife to Iraq

The Shah himself would go on and attack the same people who saved his ass and lost

What a meme
