Very interesting state. I wonder what people know about it. I already know Bill Clinton never heard of it.

Their neighbor except for Austria. But of course people don't care about history east of countries east of Berlin.

Never finished centralizing the two states. Nobles were too privileged and tore the nation apart. Inability to pacify the people of the nomadic stepes they owned.

Poland was a very interesting and strong state though during the High Middle ages. They were a massive grain exporter, and survived the plague pretty well by being insular.

Well, I don't see Swedes ruling over entire Baltic coast as they planned in 1600s

One year later she died on a toilet she made from the Polish throne. Don't do that again.

Interesting State indeed. Also interesting how they managed to prosper while being surrounded by enemies.

From 14th century to the 17th basically. This is why Casimir the Great is called great. While western countries were recovering from the plague, and Polish neighbors had dynastic disputes, he secured the future of his country. He wasn't a warrior monarch. Renaissance is usually associated with Italian countries and such but it was very vibrant in Bohemia and Poland too. A couple centuries of great prosperity later ruined by bad political decisions (constant wars even if usually victorious and elective monarchy).

Didn't they have a retarded government system?

It worked for a long time but then...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W%C5%82adys%C5%82aw_Sici%C5%84ski

Basically a bad precedence was set. The guy left the parliamentary proceedings right after he called veto and nothing would come of it but then one guy proposed that perhaps because he left they should stop the proceedings.

At least the monarch was weak which was good for business. But there should be a dynasty.

Rather Late Middle Ages/Early Modern Period (1400-1600. Poland was fragmented during the High Middle Ages
>>
>>2788190

Can it really be considered any more fragmented than France during the time? Though, the Teutonic order does throw a rather serious qualification there.. It was stronger than other European monarchs.. But still pretty weak for the time?

The English monarchy was probably the most powerful in the High Middle Ages.

Like a disease that kept spreading. Patrimonial monarchy was a mistake. The golden age for Poland started in late medieval period (1385 is a good starting point). 16th century is considered the golden age, while the 17th is the glorious one with all the great victories but it wasn't good for the future.

From my understanding, Poland could have had great infrastructure development if the country wasn't constantly devastated by war? The abundance of rivers, and fertile land would create the foundation for land enclosure with cities like Krakow, Danzig, Kiev, etc for peasants to move too and become artisans.

The Commonwealth had it all. The worst thing that can happen to you is a damaging war on your own territory which happened a couple times too many. Especially with Sweden. That's what happens when you elect your monarchs. But it happened because when the Jagiellonian dynasty died out the nobility already had a very strong position.

WARS WITH SWEDEN
>1600-1611 (truce)
>1617-1618 (truce)
>1621-1626 (truce)
>1626-1629 (truce)
>1655-1660 (Polish pyrrhic victory)

WARS WITH RUSSIA
>1609-1618 (truce)
>1632-1634 (Polish victory)
>1654-1667 (truce)

WARS WITH TURKEY
>1620-1621 (inconclusive)
>1633-1634 (white peace)
>1672-1676 (Turkish victory)
>1683-1699 (Polish victory)

End at least six Cossack uprisings.
Many ended with formal treaties, some territorial changes were made. Many wars were fought at the same time and even great victories weren't followed by political successes.
