Mississippi was the richest state in america at the time actually.

not true. Every Confederate State was notedly behind northern ones in economic development.

They exported slave cotton and that was about it. North was industrializing.

>pre AmRev
a marshy, hot, indian infested wasteland with little infrastructure and an economy devoted to agriculture

a marshy, hot, cracker infested wasteland with little infrastructure and an economy devoted to agriculture

I am unfamiliar with the Dixie Revolution - perhaps you could enlighten me.

The South was set up in a social class stratified society like England.

The large land owners were the new aristocracy. Then you had the urban merchant class. The professionals. The shopkeepers and modest land owners. The subsistence farmers and the urban working poor. Then the free blacks, and finally the slaves.

early in the 19th century the large land owners were the top of not just the south, but also the entire country. They had the economic clout and the political power. Slavery was a huge part of why they had this power and so disproportionate compared to the more populous and productive north. Even through less than 7 percent of people in the USA owned slaves.

though things changed. the country expanded west. Immigration came to the north. Industry set up in the north. export markets for the south shrunk. the elites of the South saw their fortunes and clout shrinking.

racism was used by the rich whites to keep the poor whites angry at the free and slave blacks. Since the blacks were the only thing keeping them from the bottom of society.

the better off classes of the south set up the customs and courtesies of polite society. Some of which you can still see in the South. Not that those fucking yankee barbarians know what being polite means.

Losing the war did the south a favour.
>>

destroying everything during reconstruction and then all new development going west.

dooming the South to a century of being behind.

Didn't free blacks own slaves at higher rates than whites as a whole?

Albeit they were a much smaller population.
>>
>>2785920
A peaceful end to slavery would've done us much better. Slavery was truly holding back innovation in the south, but our infrastructure has never truly recovered from the Civil War (not that there was a lot to begin with). The south is seven shades of fucked up.
>>
>>2786114
A statistically insignificant population. Free blacks could've owned slaves at a rate of 100% and it still wouldn't matter if there were only about twenty of them. If you break the number down by socioeconomic class it makes it a much clearer picture. Pre-Civil War south was a class based society much more than a racialized one. It wasn't until black slaves were free that issues of racialization came into effect in the same way that class did (not to say that slavery towards free blacks was non-existent).

Why would you want to supply material to states in a union that have previously rebelled over the descisions of an executive when those states all agreed to the power of said executive?
