Karlis Ulmanis, dictator of independent Latvia during the end of the inter-war period. Like most dictators there's a mixed opinion of him, but he generally was a mild leader who seemed to work more for the interests of the country & its people instead of enriching himself or cronies with the power of the state.

We're talking about locally benevolent. Gadaffi for all his faults, was at least interested in bettering the economic lives of Libyans locally and kept the country together . Libya still hasn't recovered from his ouster and unlike the initial civil war, no one is willing or able to pick up the tab on that one.

That's easy if you have a small population and fuckloads of oil.

Every other aspect of Libya's economy is a shithole. When the population outgrew the number you can afford to keep loafing from oil wealth, the country fell apart.

A better example is Abdullah II, a country that has no oil that rode out the Arab Spring with basically no problems because rather than relying on the oil crutch, he built an actual economy.

Jordan does have problems, namely the fact that a quarter of it's population are refugees from either Palestina, Iraq or Syria.
>>

Right, but that's not because he fucked up, but rather because other Arab countries fucked up. Jordan was capable of dealing with it's own protests.

You might be mixing up some countries, what you described is Palestine, Jordan has 11% unemployment and $5000 GDP/capita. Not great by international standard, but quite good for a MENA country with no oil.

>>
>>2777535
The funeral of Josip Broz Tito, President of Yugoslavia, was held on 8 May 1980, four days after his death on 4 May. His funeral drew many world statesmen, both of non-aligned and aligned countries. Based on the number of attending politicians and state delegations, it is still regarded as the largest state funeral in history. They included four kings, 31 presidents, six princes, 22 prime ministers and 47 ministers of foreign affairs. They came from both sides of the Cold War, from 128 different countries out of 154 UNO members at the time.

Orson Welles once called him "the greatest man in the world today."

Give the Middle East 10 leaders of his calibre today and 90% of the region's problems would be solved within 20 years.

There was no way to prevent it. The West and Sunni extremists were going to start shit eventually.

Thankfully it happened under a strong leader like Assad who is going to come out of this the victor.

We also get the bonus of millions of disgusting Sunni pigs leaving Syria forever. I hope there's a purge after the war is over too.

Best example I can think of is Augustus Caesar, a.k.a., Octavian. He had consolidated all power in Rome: Religious authority (after taking the place of Pontifex from Lepidus), Military authority, and political authority. Although he maintained the illusion that the senate had power, indeed, he was for all intents an purposes the supreme ruler of Rome. But after the purge of his worst enemies, he enjoyed a benevolent and peaceful reign that created the 'Pax Augustus', and improved the livlihoods of all Romans.

Uhh, Tunisia was one of the most pro-western MENA countries, and that's where the Arab Spring started.

I'd think it was the other way around, where a pro-western attitude combined with high western investment makes the population more accepting of peaceful transition of government. The western powers also intervened for stability to save their investments,

Nah. American neocons initially praised Arab Spring because it made it look like the Iraq war was justified by scaring the bad guys into good behavior. After Mubarak and Ben Ali fell, and Iran's color coded revolution failed, they realized that the only regimes actually in danger of falling were the ones most closely aligned with the US and Israel. The Libyan and Syrian revolutions were well on their way to defeat until the west intervened militarily to prop up the rebels, Saudi Arabia (with a great deal of American help) was forced to put down Bahraini protestors by force, while Morsi quite helpfully split the Egyptian opposition by being a crazy islamist.

Are you sure you are not mixing up another country?

I found this article that states that Jordan receives 1.15 billion in foreign aid out of a government budget of 12 billion, which still isn't 25%.

http://carnegieendowment.org/sada/63061

Then the world bank says total aid received is 2.1 billion

http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/DT.ODA.ALLD.CD?locations=JO

While their GDP is 37.5 billion, not remotely close to 25%.

That spike in aid received is to defray the costs of having Syrian refugees.

Jordan will fall apart once the flow aid money dries up and the west stops paying for it's defense.

They deserved it, they would have been the marxist thugs who confiscate property from lower-middle class small businesses in the name of "the people" only to spend it on the military and themselves. If not then they would have been the apologetics who would sing songs of praise for their masters until they themselves end up in the gulags.

I highly doubt that over a third of the Chilean population actually deserved torture. The Pinochet government was just paranoid, and by engaging in a decade and a half of white terror, they ensured that free-market capitalism would always be unpopular in Chile.

Morocco - 6 killed
Bahrain - 93 killed
Qatar - ?

whereas

Syria - 2500 killed before the FSA even organized

Libya - est 3000 killed before Western intervention

There's a fundemental difference in the reaction of the state between the states that fell into civil war and the states that didn't. People aren't happy when their own government is killing them by the thousands.

Chile had a population of 10.09 million in 1973. According to the Rettig Report, 2,279 people were killed. According to the Valech Report, 31,947 people were tortured. Both of these commissions were organized by the Chilean government, so there's no great reason to doubt their validity. The number of killed was later raised to 3, 065. That means that roughly one-third of the Chilean population was killed or tortured (and we can presume most of the ones killed were tortured first). So, no, I'm not implying anything; I'm a stating a fact.

literally the only mistake he made was siding with Hitler in WW2. He originally was flirting with the idea of siding with Britain and France and HATED Hitler, especially after his overthrow and take over of Austria. Although this is a pretty huge fuck up. Italian Facism is a very interesting philsophy as opposed to the boring and shallow ideas of nazism which is basically just edgy LARPing and racism.

Are you 12 years old?
>>
>>2794068
Literally by definition.

If you have rule of law, you can't be a dictator, at least in the modern sense of the word.
>>
>>2784503
To be fair even Caesar operated by the rule of law and he's the most famous dictator of all time, it's just that the word can have a negative and positive connotation (although most leaders that serve for over 20 years with little opposition are generally considered dictators).

Lee Kuan Yew was a great man.

1) Introduced secularism to a country that had been ruled by Islamic law and a Caliph for centuries.

2) Brought Islam under his secular government's heel by shutting down dervish lodges and religious orders and having the Quran translated into Turkish so that it could be read and preached in a language the public could understand. He also had Arabic replaced as the liturgical language - the call to prayer and the prayers themselves were conducted in Turkish - a move that still rankles with Turkish Islamists to this day.

3) Replaced the Arabic script for written Turkish with the Latin script, a move that boosted Turkish literacy massively as the language was now written in a phonetic alphabet rather than one that required a high degree of technical knowledge to decipher (the Arabic alphabet really doesn't work well with Turkic languages).

4) Set up schools and 'village institutes' that educated an illiterate Turkish peasantry that had been neglected by the Ottoman elites for centuries.

5) Passed reforms so that Turks had to follow European styles of dress, reinforcing the idea that the country was Westward rather than Eastward looking.

6) Oversaw a neutral foreign policy that had Turkey on cordial terms with its neighbours, halting the centuries-long slide into ever-contracting borders.

7) Set the foundations for Turkish industrialisation.

8) Restored Turkish national pride and created a national identity after years of humiliation as the unwashed scum of a failing empire that prized non-Turks.

And all of this after saving his country from being partitioned by the British, French, Italians, Greeks and Armenians in an independence campaign that combined military and diplomatic brilliance.

Yeah, "white terror". So do you want "white terror" or "red terror" by commies(e.g. great purge, great leaps, cultural revolution...etc) if you only have these two choices? This so-called "white terror" is always over exaggerated by Chiang's political opponents and Taiwan Separatists, what he did is no worst than Park Chung Hee. Not to mention his son Chiang Ching Kuo who actually was a really nice leader and a good friend and inspiration of Lee Kuan Yew.

Like fuck he did. First of all, he was an Arabic chauvinist, Lybia has a shitton of ethnicities and everyone who was not an Arab was not eligible for citizenship, which meant that you were not eligible for any state-owned benefit. Second, the 'benefits' were a lot less impressive than anti-Western shills try to paint them and he curbstomped the very concept of private enterprise. In his time the proportion of civilians spying on each other was the highest in the world. He was a fucking Soviet-aligned dictator like any other and one of the few who recieved a fitting end. Fuck this guy. I honestly don't know how people think that a happy and well-kept population puts literally everything they have at risk to oust someone just because some CIA agents told them so.
