Why was stoning a punishment in ancient ME? And still is today in some muslim countries. It just seems to barbaric to use as a punishment

My theory is because its a group activity.

This probably. People loved watching executions, so getting to participate is that much better.

I mean life was fucking boring back then. It was the highlight of the week to get to stone someone. People probably spent the entire week looking for the perfect stones.
It continues on today because Islam is not only religion-but policy. By policy, they re-enact Sharia norms.

being public as well makes people deter whatever warrants it
>>2772968
kind of. it's a way of alleviating guilt. if everybody killed him it's almost like nobody killed him.
>>2772964
How much did they charge to let you hit him with a rock

1. It's a collective punishment and so something that an entire community can participate in
2. It's a relatively slow and painful way of executing someone, serving as ample deterrent to the other people participating
3. It's a cost effective way of executing someone in an environment where most people are dirt poor and rocks are everywhere
Stoning the village faggot is healthy for the development of a sound and functional society. Prove me wrong.
