you know its fucking unbelievable how little the "priest genocide" in Mexico is known throught the world.
i mean by the end of the war their were only a couple hundred priests in all of mexico, and most states didn't have a single one at all.

thank God my great uncle fought with the cristeros.

Porfirio Diaz?
the Revolution?
the "perfect dictatorship?

oh boy! Santa Anna may have been a bastard but he led an interesting life and effected Mexico in way still felt today.

well "Antonio de Padua María Severino López de Santa Anna y Pérez de Lebrón" fought in the war of independence, and like most creole Generals, at first he fought against the rebels, but later switched sides late in the war to be on the winning side.

in 1823, after the Revolution and Iturbide proclaimed himself Emperor, Iturbide dissolved the congress which i guess pissed of Santa Anna who then came up with "Plan of Casa Mata" which was ment to abolish the monarchy forever and make mexico a republic

>>

depends who you talk to.
i think he was a hero to the poor, but my families from chihuahua, there he is a hero to us.
if he was a brigand why did the keep fighting carranza after it was clear they would win.
why did he say while in comfortable retirement at a ranch, that he would rebell again if the people asked him to

>added to the local economy.

In 1846, the United States went to war against Mexico and sent a naval and land expedition to conquer Alta California. At first they had an easy time of it capturing the major ports including San Diego, but the Californios in southern Alta California struck back. Following the successful revolt in Los Angeles, the American garrison at San Diego was driven out without firing a shot in early October 1846. Mexican partisans held San Diego for three weeks until October 24, 1846, when the Americans recaptured it. For the next several months the Americans were blockaded inside the pueblo. Skirmishes occurred daily and snipers shot into the town every night. The Californios drove cattle away from the pueblo hoping to starve the Americans and their Californio supporters out. On December 1 the Americans garrison learned that the dragoons of General Stephen W. Kearney were at Warner's Ranch. Commodore Robert F. Stockton sent a mounted force of fifty under Captain Archibald Gillespie to march north to meet him. Their joint command of 150 men, returning to San Diego, encountered about 93 Californios under Andrés Pico. In the ensuing Battle of San Pasqual, fought in the San Pasqual Valley which is now part of the city of San Diego, the Americans suffered their worst losses in the campaign. Subsequently, a column led by Lieutenant Gray arrived from San Diego, rescuing Kearny's battered and blockaded command.[24]

So liberal, doesn't justify subjugation of minorities (anglos). Texas was always a backwater to Mexico proper anyway.
>>
>>2763237
That's only because of said defeat to the Texans, which was crushing. They called him the "Napoleon of the west", perhaps not the best of all time, but at the time he was a formidable force. Probably was defeated because of his pride and hubris.
>>
>>2763250
> subjugation
I don't think you know what that word means. It had nothing to do with the anglo's minority status, but their refusal to pay taxes and refusal to stop using slaves. The Mexican state was within its sovereign rights to punish people who violated these rules.

I don't think the Federal Army was that big, but Diaz and the Cientificos had mismanaged for too long anyway. Diaz laid a lot of railroad which would facilitate troop movement, but revolutionaries like Villa hit the railroads to cut them off. Diaz folded quickly. The real fighting was during the post-revolutionary interegnum. It wasn't just revolutionary leaders and counter-revs vying for control though. The break down of authority allowed mobilized groups of dudes to descend into brigands.

Not as it is right now, no. It needs some cultural shifts in attitude and unfortunately these shifts can't happen peacefully and must forcibly occur violently. The flipside is that the situation Mexico is in right now is actually the same shit spiral, it's just a much slower descent but make no mistake it's still going down.

I think part of the problem with Mexico's politics is the perfidious exaltation of democracy and populism within the public conscience. The supposition that because something is democratic it's good and right and justified when that simply isn't the case. The overextending of rights that have moved far beyond natural ones and the overgrowth of government that diminishes the individual. The lazy and apathetic thought process of the locals in regards to politics also further hampers things but I've found this to be to a greater or lesser extent the general mentality of the entire world's population. I think what Mexico is lacking is not only a good leader but also a concrete set of ideals to rally around and under which to build a nation. Generally speaking a constitution fills this need but I have found that Mexico's is rather clumsily written, over articulate and too poorly understood by the general people of the nation and as such can't fulfill this purpose.

Don't get me wrong, as a legal document it's fine. It's just not a powerful or moving piece of public literature.

Your lake town is shit, the idea was shit then and its shit now and no amount of nearly as primitive Spanish opinions are going to change that.

It's a fucking Salton sea or Lake Baikal. it has no outlet to the ocean and all the water just stagnates there until it evaporates hell half of it is a literal swamp. All the animal shit? Stays in the lake. Animal piss? Stays in the lake. Slowly decomposing organic trash? Stays in the lake. Every year when the water level drops and there's dead fish everywhere? Their carcasses stay in the lake if no one eats them. That a bunch of people coming from a culture in which access to water was equated to hygiene and who had no idea what germs or viruses were thought the place was nice and clean isn't surprising. What is surprising is that some retard from modern mexico thinks building within and around a stagnant swamp lake is just the best idea ever.

it's possible that relative to the spanish standards tenochtitlan looked clean. but that doesn't explain the impressive aqueduct system that funneled clean water into the city from the surrounding hills, the fact that we only hear of sickness in context of epidemics that soon spread like wildfire and which were accelerated by the collapse of agricultural systems and the spanish siege of tenochtitlan, which also cut off all fresh water from the city, leading people to drink the salt water of the lake and therefore accelerating dehydration (aztec sources write of this). also doesn't explain the epilogue to the conquest, the spanish construction of mexico city, which was plagues by flooding and rampant disease (noted in sources) because of the ecological system that the aztecs constructed was destroyed forever.

>the fact that we only hear of sickness in context of epidemics

How else would you like sickness to be categorized in a stone age society that barely has documented writing and certainly has nothing approaching the scientific method?

Half the time it's the humors in the bowels or god Tintotzel of the possum anuses didn't get enough of your blood letting this month. If it wasn't obvious it wasn't even a "disease" and this shit kept right on going for most of human history, it certainly isn't only the Mexica that misidentified cleanliness. I doubt they connected malaria with mosquitoes given you're always getting bit by them and never keel over.

This is all beside the point though, the entire argument was that some guy thought it would be just awesome if Mexico city was still inside or next to a lake. Even modern day mexico city, that you will find is quite lakeless save for a sliver in Xochimilco, still struggles with mosquitoes every year and has a public awareness campaign to limit mosquito breeding sites. What do you think that would look like with a giant lake right next to the city? What do you think it looked like back then? Probably pretty shitty by todays standards and it would only extrapolate in shittiness given time and the introduction of non biodegradable garbage and massive population increases, which was the point.

Still this does not excuse what the government did, executing them without trial or any formal charges and then concealing their duplicity and actions. Yeah, they illegally commandeered a bus, they were idiot teenagers that thought the ends justified the means because it's all good if you're using it to go to a rally promoting [insert your super awesome political cause here], right?
