Probably because Jews were treated as shit wherever they went and none wanted to take their contributions even when possible. When a higher level of cleanliness among Jewd lead to less deaths in plague people just assumed it was because of Jews poissoned wells.

This isn't just a shitpost. I'm sincerely posing the question "What went right" when it comes to Italian minority communities in other European nations compared to Jews.

As was France and half of Germany. The religious differences between one Christian denomination and the other are also smaller than between Christian denominations and Judaism.

The looks quickly get irrelevant due to interbreeding with the local population, within a few generations.

It's also false to assume that Jews simply never got along with the local populations. Take Germany, for example: Although there were many local and sometimes widespread pogroms throughout their history, their history together is also over a thousand years long, the vast majority of that time being free of that extreme acts of animosity.

I remember listening to a class on the early globalised cities, with Lisbon taken as an example. Apparently Italians ran everything that had anything to with commerce, and were very much resented for it. The professor read letters from actually Portuguese merchants who complained that Italians were basically all conspiring together to ruin their trade.

There's the fact that the oldest ghetto in the world is the one in Venice, it recently celebrated its 400th anniversary. Of course Jews and protestant minorities tended to have an easier time in Venice than other countries, for example Venice protected Giovanni Diodati, a Swiss-Italian Hebrew teacher and protestant, who basically translated by himself the Italian equivalent of the King James Bible in Geneva.

Ultimately, I guess Italian-Jewish relations are simply too full of oddities to be unsuccessful. They read like Rabbis arguing with one another.
