Why have people on the internet become obsessed with correcting 'bad history'?
Because people like to be right, especially if it happens to be unpopular and if conforms to their beliefs.

Because if it's incorrect, it's just fiction.

The internet. It's such an overwhelming source of information that it has literally overloaded everyone, and with services like google who "narrow" your search to fit your perceptions, it's inevitable that different views on something will be harder to disprove.
I think it's a subtle form of anti-intellectualism. They're not really interested in correcting misconceptions about the past, but to point out that some historian (or perhaps more realistically, some history teacher) once said something that is wrong. By doing so they hope to tar the entire academic establishment by association, and thereby justify not reading nerd shit to better appreciate the great novel of our time that is Twilight.

Google is such a meme. It lost its luster. Just links to wikis and blogs. All the real knowledge is still under lovely and key or behind academic paywalls.

People who use the word bad history are mostly revisionists.
Just look at /r/badhistory on Reddit. It's filled with a bunch of revisionist fags.

This is what happens when you get your knowledge of history from popular 'debunking' sources instead of reading historical works and drawing your own conclusions. You merely replace one oversimplification with another.

Because understanding history has broader political implications.
Any objection to Islamification is responded to with the debunked "Islamic Golden Age" meme coupled with the "Christian Dark Age" meme, for example.
