No, it's just that virtuous Catholics were sick of the corruption in the church. If I was a peasant who obeyed the church and I saw a rich asshole breaking every commandment and just paying off the church afterwards I'd be pissed.

It wasn't about the money per se, it was the doctrine of indulgences itself. If the church had just bullied the laity with a collection plate I doubt there'd've been much issue.

I'm pretty sure the actual doctrine is just a form of penance. It was the way the doctrine was abused as opposed to the doctrine itself.
