He hated the Catholics, not the Irish

The Irish elite families that Cromwell sacked, were often Cambro-Norman families that had tried since the end of the War of the Roses to become King, or create a new Kingdom in Ireland, from their point of view, some Welsh nobles were in power now, they had just as much rite to be king.

That was the mood of relations prior to this, so Cromwell didn't start this conflict, he inherited it.

It was Scottish by this time, which surely would've really pissed me off if I was a Cambro Norman in the south of the country.

Cromwell invaded the Normans in Ireland, which just happened to be where the last vestiges of Yorkist legitimacy hide in secret networks.

Cromwell united both the Cambro-Normans and Irish against English rule, before this, some northern Irish kings might sack lands in the south, but after Cromwell, the whole Island was more united against foreign rule.
