Before the economic systems of that period gave nations enough money to fund large independent mercenary forces they didn't exist in such a form. In terms of fighting it was just medieval warfare on steroids, but still not really part of the period if you consider them separate

Medieval and Renaissance are not opposites or succeeding era's anymore than Rococo is the era after Early Modern. Depending on who you ask the Middle Ages or Medieval period ends in 1453, 1492 or 1500. The Renaissance is generally considered to have started with Giotto around the year 1300 and to have ended around 1600 with the Baroque starting.
