Was the US really so buttblasted about Vietnam that they had to support the Khmer Rouge?

The United "If it isn't free'd, let it bleed" States would support anyone that is against the USSR, at least for the most part.

Letting Vietnam have complete, undisturbed control over Cambodia would eventually threaten Thailand, an ally of the USA. The domino theory wasn't necessarily true as the old guard of the Khmer Rouge communists educated in Vietnam were purged and the Khmer Rouge split with Vietnam, but the American foreign policy makers would rather support the Khmer Rouge than risk communist infiltration in Thailand.

>A small country that has been through 2 wars is a threat to Thailand
>Therefore we must support the other genocidal dictator!

>too peabrained to understand foreign policy and politics
Who cares if he's a great dictator, if America has interest in even someone like hitler they would buff the shit out of him (essentially they did, and they supported the National socialists in Spain too in the 30's, Britain also did, because everyone was afraid for their tight pucker of Lenin's revolution spreading to Europe)
