For the rest it was a mixed blessing, the Japanese brought an end to the turmoil of warlord control and opened up trade, though they lived utterly at the whim of the Japanese militarists and were exploited about as much as they were before, pushed to increase production and support the army.

For an übermensch it probably made it a bit more practical to leave. They would work for the Japanese laying a railroad or something and earn some money to move somewhere else where they might find better fortunes.
