i don't think so. people who want to listen to audiobooks here want to listen to interesting material, so they'd want more variety than that. the good thing about doing it ourselves, too, is because we can read from tons of history books that audiobook companies would never bother hiring someone for. we can record all types of obscure subjects and as a result we'd raise the level of knowledge and awareness about subjects that interest us.

also, as a tech pleb, what constitutes decent recording equipment?

yeah that's why i thought it up. some people have good voices for audiobooks and others don't. i've listened to some official audiobooks with awful narrators, so why shouldn't we on /his/ create our own on historical subjects that interest us?

I have a Blue Snowball and a little mini-sound booth of sorts that it rests in; improves the audio quality of it plenty.

Alone, the Snowball is passable. If you want a genuinely good audio quality though, you'll need a pop filter and a sound booth of sorts.

What I did was get a cubic foot fabric container; I taped sound-absorbing foam to each side of the inside. Set it down with the open end facing you, set the Snowball inside, and it's enough to noticeably increase audio quality. Good setup if you can't go covering the inside of your closet or something in sound foam.

yeah if i had the time and the will i'd organize a bookclub here, but without direction such an enterprise would fizzle out pretty quickly. i got thinking about recording audiobooks because if people record at their own pace it'd be less demanding, and once they upload their material other people would be able to listen and then discuss what they've heard here on /his/ or in a chatroom on discord or something
