I wish we had someone like Mannerheim. Even if Finland was in a slightly better situation than we were he had the right insticts and knew who to ally with and when.

Stalin's main goal was to occupy and annex or install a puppet regime in Finland, which he failed to do so. He had already chosen the leader puppet regime, O.W Kuusinen, who did govern over Karelia after the war.

145/5.5 = 26

It had taken them 3 months to get to viipuri and with spring melt coming and promises of french and english support staling cut his losses and took what he could. Taking the whole country would have probably taken a whole year or more which would have been followed by decades of guerilla warfare (this actually happened in the baltics). Finnish army meanwhile offered peace only because they were literally running out of ammo.

Reasons for advancing on Karelian Isthmus was purely tactical, to have positions which would be easier to defend.
They conquered teritories east of Finland during continuation war, because they percieved this teritory historicaly as Finnish - The Greater Finland and they didn't have intentions to go furthert than that(even tough I have to agree, that at the time of continuation war, justification for these claims was weak, since oh so trustable Stalin had killed or deported most of finnic ethnic groups living there).
