because they just were. They were naturally selected as rulers among the indigenous Italians for their war prowess. They were an authoritarian society hellbent on expansion, seeing themselves as the natural rulers of all. Christianity came from them, without them it would have fizzled out into the ranks of the many dead religions. The romans are the defining characteristic of western history and we can see their track marks even in the political debates over the european union today.
