You know, one thing that always struck me about the ACW is how often attacks tactically failed. Even in the worst days of trench warfare in WW1, you usually took the line of trench you were going after, (whether or not you could hold it on the counterattack was a different story entirely) but the ACW seems to be the only war I'm familiar with where the dominant mode of fighting is

>One side plops down somewhere and fortifies
>Other side attacks and almost inevitably loses
>Sits around wondering why it didn't work even though it didn't the last 20 times.

You should check out the battles of the American revolution. I've never seen a war where almost every single battle was riddled with mistakes and bludders on both sides.
