What are some lesser-known atrocities that happened in the world? Everyone knows about Hitler and Stalin but what about the Mau Mau uprising or the 1804 Haitian massacre. Gimme the skinny on some of your most interesting, horrible, or politically complicated atrocities.

Keep it blue, my dudes.

The genocide of Greeks by the Ottoman Empire is usually overlooked in history books.

That being said the extent of said "genocide" was probably exaggerated following the formation of the Balkan League and the fall of the Ottoman Empire in Europe.

The Herero genocide.

From 1904 to 1907, the German Empire attempted to wipe out the 80,000-strong Namaqua people of modern-day Namibia. Using Herero attacks on German settlers as justification, General Lothar von Trotha ordered his men to ruthlessly pursue and kill all the Herero they could find, even women and children. The majority of the deaths were when the Herero were forced to flee into the Kalahari desert, with the Germans picking off anyone who tried to split off or stop. Most of them tried to make it to British-controlled Botswana, but the vast majority died of exposure in the desert; less than a thousand managed to cross the British border.

After 1904, the Germans switched tactics and began herding surviving Herero (mostly women and children) into concentration camps throughout the colony. The most infamous one was located on Shark Island, where prisoners were mostly used as slave laborers. About 80% of everyone sent there was executed or died due to malnutrition, disease, starvation, dehydration, or excessive cruelty on the guards' behalf. A certain Dr. Bofinger was also said to have injected various prisoners suffering from scurvy with a bunch of random shit, including arsenic.

After 1907, the concentration camps were closed down, the Herero were dispersed across the colonies for labor, and were banned from owning property. The total estimated death toll was 65,000 according to the German government, and it is considered to be one of the first genocides of the 21st century. Several years later, the German government erected a memorial for those who died... specifically, the German soldiers who died fighting the Herero.

What happened to the Taino people of the caribean islands.

"nce all the inhabitants of this island found themselves in the same hopeless predicament as had those on Hispaniola – that is, they were either enslaved or foully murdered – some began to

[30]

flee into the hills while others were in such despair that they took their own lives. Men and women hanged themselves and even strung up their own children. As a direct result of the barbarity of one Spaniard (a man I knew personally) more than two hundred locals committed suicide, countless thousands in all dying in this way.

There was one royal official on the island who, when he was allotted three hundred natives, worked them so hard that, at the end of three months, only thirty – that is to say, just one tenth of the original number – were still alive, the other two hundred and seventy having perished down the mines. Later, he received another consignment of much the same number, or even more, and he saw them off, too. The more he received, the more he killed, until eventually he himself died and the Devil took his soul.

During the three or four months I was there, more than seven thousand children died of hunger, after their parents had been shipped off to the mines, and I saw many other horrors also.

You realize that the Taino genocide was brought to light by a Spaniard, Bartomole de las Casas, right? That it was pushed by the Catholic Church to get the Spaniards to knock that shit off so the Church could convert more people. It wasn't anglo propaganda.
>>
>>2721513
Hi, no. this is a spanish account from friar De las Casas. Who was there as it happened.

Bartolomé de las Casas Spanish: [bɑr tɔ lɔˈmɛ ðɛ] ( listen)(c. 1484[1] – 18 July 1566) was a 16th-century Spanish historian, social reformer and Dominican friar. He became the first resident Bishop of Chiapas, and the first officially appointed "Protector of the Indians". His extensive writings, the most famous being A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies and Historia de Las Indias, chronicle the first decades of colonization of the West Indies and focus particularly on the atrocities committed by the colonizers against the indigenous peoples.[2]
It was later decided to hunt down the natives who had fled into the mountains, and the subsequent hunting parties were responsible for carnage beyond belief. Thus it was that the whole of the island was devastated and depopulated, and it now affords, as we discovered on a recent visit, a moving and heartrending spectacle, transformed, as it has been, into one vast, barren wasteland.

>genocide
>In January 1904, the Herero people, led by Samuel Maharero and Nama Captain Hendrik Witbooi, rebelled against German colonial rule. In August, German General Lothar von Trotha defeated the Herero in the Battle of Waterberg and drove them into the desert of Omaheke, where most of them died of dehydration. In October, the Nama people also rebelled against the Germans, only to suffer a similar fate.
>The first phase of the genocide(?) was characterized by widespread death from starvation and dehydration due to the prevention of the retreating Herero from leaving the Namib Desert by German forces.
>try to start a war with the German forces
>get btfo and retreat to a desert where you starve
>blame the Germans

Whatever the Spanish did on few occasions, is nothing compared to entire genocidal legacy of anglos and protestants.

They have been waging propaganda war against catholic countries and the church since they got created.
Like right now - you mention Spanish atrocities, yet we never hear about the British ones, except maybe the treatment of Boars, because its recent.

How come we have countless movies & books about Night of St. Bartholomew (1572), where Catholics did what Protestants ware planing to do to them, but not a single film on the Siege of Rome (1527) that happened just 50 years earlier, where protestants burned & pillaged it to the ground.

So, like I said - Anglo propaganda.

The War in the Vendée.

From March to December 1793, forces loyal to the newly formed French Republic fought against residents of the Vendée, who rose up after the government began arresting clergymen and confiscating Churches. During which the insurrection, the French government literally decreed that Vendeans were to be "exterminated" and proceeded to murder nearly 130,000 people (at the cost of 30,000 men). Methods of slaughter included death squads, starvation, mass hangings, burning of towns, and "Republican marriages".

Some French historians have coined it to be the first modern genocide, where methods of mass killing were allegedly experimented on and perfected by the government to maximize efficiency.

It's just a "market correction" after the European powers sloppily left the place, and there was a power vacuum. Things stabilize well enough after being left alone (Baathist Middle east), until the people that cause the mess return, one could say to deliberately cause chaos and remake their artificial states, to the detriment and against the will of the people.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yekatit_12

Yekatit 12 is a date in the Ethiopian calendar, equivalent to 19 February in the Gregorian calendar, which is commonly used to refer to the indiscriminate massacre and imprisonment of Ethiopians by elements of the Italian occupation forces following an attempted assassination of Marshal Rodolfo Graziani, Marchese di Neghelli, Viceroy of Italian East Africa, on 19 February 1937. Marshal The Marchese di Neghelli had led the Italian forces to victory over their Ethiopian opponents in the Second Italian invasion of Ethiopia and was supreme governor of Italian East Africa. This was one of the worst atrocities committed by the Italian occupation forces.

Estimates of the number of people killed in the three days that followed the attempt on the Marchese di Neghelli's life vary. Ethiopian sources afterwards estimated as many as 30,000 people were killed by the Italians, while Italian sources claimed only a few hundred were killed. Over the following week, numerous Ethiopians suspected or accused of opposing Italian rule were rounded up and executed, including members of the Black Lions, and other members of the aristocracy; most of the 125 young men whom Emperor Haile Selassie had sent abroad to receive college education, and were still resident in Ethiopia, were killed.[1] Many more were imprisoned, even collaborators like Ras Gebre Haywot, the son of Ras Mikael of Wollo (who had been imprisoned by Emperor Haile Selassie for nine years prior to the Italian invasion), Brehane Markos, and even Ayale Gebre; the latter had helped the Italians identify the two men who made the attempt on General Graziani's life.[2]

The final reprisal struck in May. Investigators found that Abraha and Mogus had stayed a while at Debra Libanos, and slight circumstantial evidence suggested that the monks had foreknowledge of their plans. The Marchese di Neghelli (better known as Marshal Graziani), mindful of his misadventure at Jijiga, believed they were complicit and on 19 May cabled the local commander: "Therefore execute summarily all monks without distinction including the Vice-Prior." The following day, the feast day of their patron saint Tekle Haymanot, 297 monks plus 23 laymen were shot — the entire population of the monastery.[4]

This:

>The Shirazi Era came to an abrupt end with the advent of the Portuguese at the end of the 15th century. The Portuguese first raided and then conquered the Shirazi/Swahili cities, with the aim of controlling the trading routes in the Indian Ocean. In fact, they did not achieve their aim, as the fall of the Shirazi city-states actually caused trading between Africa and Asia to collapse and eventually extinguish.

Reminds me of this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_Malacca

>Competition from other ports such as Johor saw Asian traders bypass Malacca and the city began to decline as a trading port.[3] Rather than achieving their ambition of dominating it, the Portuguese had fundamentally disrupted the organisation of the Asian trade network. Rather than a centralised port of exchange of Asian wealth exchange, or a Malay state to police the Strait of Malacca that made it safe for commercial traffic, trade was now scattered over a number of ports amongst bitter warfare in the Straits.[3]

Has there been shittier conquerors than the Portuguese? Their attempt to take control over trade in the Indian Ocean instead killed it.

Because it was caused by poor manuevers on the part of the Henero. Is that where you've finally gotten to, that poor military decision making leading to a majority of deaths equals genocide? I guess we can call Stalingrad a genocide, or maybe we should call Gallipoli a genocide as well.

This is what happens when politics lead history, one-sided victories in war become genocides, cheapening the term so when it is used accurately it's meaning is lost.

>The start of the famine has been attributed to a failed monsoon in 1769 that caused widespread drought and two consecutive failed rice crops.[4]
>The poor infrastructure investments in pre-British period,
>devastation from war,
>and exploitative tax revenue maximization policies of the Mughal Empire rulers before 1765,
>and the British East India Company after 1765, crippled the economic resources of the rural population.[4][8]

>>
>>2724928
That's all wrong though. The article is just repeating outdated information and doesn't seem to have a proper source.

>Most Swahili have their own traditions concerning their origins and subsequent development. Many tell of early immigrants from Shiraz who established the earliest settlements and ruling dynasties on the coast. It is unlikely that these traditions were literally true, however, for there is little archaeological, cultural, or linguistic evidence of Persian influence on Swahili, and the role of Shiraz in Indian Ocean trade had already declined before Shirazi began to appear in Swahili traditions. Not only that, but many of the traditions state that the Shirazi came not from Shiraz, but from Shungwaya, the legendary Swahili homeland along the Kenyan-Somali coast. Those who claimed to be Shirazi, thus, were probably early Swahili who migrated south to establish themselves as the first families, or waungwvana, of the major towns of the coast. Given the common practice of adopting the names of prestigious places as family names, or nisbas, they must have taken the name Shiraz as their nisba, just as many were to later take names from Oman in the nineteenth century.
>The Shirazi traditions also relate how the Shirazi paid tribute to the local inhabitants, married their daughters, and had sons by them, who then became the legitimate rulers of the town through their dual inheritance. The Shirazi traditions are thus elegant models of the historical development of Swahili societies. To be a Shirazi was to be a real Swahili who settled along the coast, paid tribute to and intermarried with the local inhabitants, and subsequently became the ruling class. Subsequent traditions expanded on this history to show how the towns then developed into complex, stratified societies with the expansion of trade from the twelfth to the fifteenth century.

It is, the famine wouldn't have happened without the drought, and the drought didn't occur until 1779, the East India Trading Company didn't come into power until 1765. The Mughal government's failure to create infrastructure was a leading factor, the crime of the East India Trading Company was the increase in taxes to offset revenue lost, but the company itself was neither the creator of the famine or the infrastructure failure which would have prevented the deaths during the period of low yeild.

Rhineland massacres during the First Crusade

Albert of Aix:
At the beginning of summer in the same year in which Peter, and Gottschalk, after collecting an army, had set out, there assembled in like fashion a large and innumerable host of Christians from diverse kingdoms and lands; namely, from the realms of France, England, Flanders, and Lorraine. . . . I know not whether by a judgment of the Lord, or by some error of mind;, they rose in a spirit of cruelty against the Jewish people scattered throughout these cities and slaughtered them without mercy, especially in the Kingdom of Lorraine, asserting it to be the beginning of their expedition and their duty against the enemies of the Christian faith. This slaughter of Jews was done first by citizens of Cologne. These suddenly fell upon a small band of Jews and severely wounded and killed many; they destroyed the houses and synagogues of the Jews and divided among themselves a very large, amount of money. When the Jews saw this cruelty, about two hundred in the silence of the night began flight by boat to Neuss. The pilgrims and crusaders discovered them, and after taking away all their possessions, inflicted on them similar slaughter, leaving not even one alive.

Not long after this, they started upon their journey, as they had vowed, and arrived in a great multitude at the city of Mainz. There Count Emico, a nobleman, a very mighty man in this region, was awaiting, with a large band of Teutons, the arrival of the pilgrims who were coming thither from diverse lands by the King's highway...Emico and the rest of his band held a council and, after sunrise, attacked the Jews in the hall with arrows and lances. Breaking the bolts and doors, they killed the Jews, about seven hundred in number, who in vain resisted the force and attack of so many thousands. They killed the women, also, and with their swords pierced tender children of whatever age and sex.

Speaking of the Jews

>The Kitos War (115–117) (Hebrew: מרד הגלויות: mered ha'galuyot or mered ha'tfutzot (מרד התפוצות); translation: rebellion of the diaspora. Latin: Tumultus Iudaicus) occurred during the period of the Jewish–Roman wars, 66–136. While the majority of the Roman armies were fighting Trajan's Parthian War on the eastern border of the Roman Empire, major uprisings by ethnic Judeans in Cyrenaica, Cyprus and Egypt spiraled out of control, resulting in a widespread slaughter of left behind Roman garrisons and Roman citizens by Jewish rebels. Some of the areas with the heaviest massacres were left so utterly annihilated that others were made to settle these areas to prevent the absence of any remaining presence. The rebellions were finally crushed by Roman legionary forces, chiefly by the Roman general Lusius Quietus, whose nomen later gave the conflict its title, as "Kitos" is a later corruption of Quietus.

>Dio Cassius states of Jewish insurrectionaries:

>"'Meanwhile the Jews in the region of Cyrene had put one Andreas at their head and were destroying both the Romans and the Greeks. They would cook their flesh, make belts for themselves of their entrails, anoint themselves with their blood, and wear their skins for clothing. Many they sawed in two, from the head downwards. Others they would give to wild beasts and force still others to fight as gladiators. In all, consequently, two hundred and twenty thousand perished. In Egypt, also, they performed many similar deeds, and in Cyprus under the leadership of Artemio. There, likewise, two hundred and forty thousand perished. For this reason no Jew may set foot in that land, but even if one of them is driven upon the island by force of the wind, he is put to death. Various persons took part in subduing these Jews, one being Lusius, who was sent by Trajan."[3]
