Kissinger has been alive for a long time. He advised Borgia when he captured the Romagna, he convinced Pericles to levy tribute from the Delian League, he drafted the Schlieffen Plan, he was at Caesar's side when he crossed the Rubicon into Rome, and he was at Leo's when he turned away the Hun from the same city centuries later. Kissinger has been alive for a long time.
He gets a lot of shit, most of which is justified, but his realist approach to foreign policy that was adopted by the Straussians and Neocons has unquestionably strengthened the position of the United States in regards to other countries. In one of his books, I forget which one, he talked about how the commitment to the Vietnam War despite mounting public opposition was an exceptionally strong deterrent against Soviet encroachment, as it demonstrated American resolve, so that US withdrawal and concession fin Vietnam was less of an issue. He views the world in such a way, where wars are fought not to achieve specific objectives, but to either expand the projection of power or to demonstrate the capability of power.

give me the quick rundown on this guy

What you've described is the opposite of the neocon worldview; they think that values, not power relations, make up politics and that values can be instilled by institutions. Kissinger was a realist; he has more in common with Obama's foreign policy than either did with Bush's.
And don't blame it on Strauss.
