LBJ did nothing because before Nixon won the election it looked like he would lose to Humphrey anyway, and after he'd won the election he figured it would destabilize the country too much. Hard to say if he was right, but we sure as shit didn't need to suffer through so many more years of Vietnam in service of Nixon's sociopathic ambitions.
