Britain wasn't praying to be left alone. They beat the Germans in the air war in late 1940, and as long as the sea lanes to the US stayed open (and the Germans really had no way to close them for good) they were impregnable. Far from praying to be left alone, the Brits were busy trying to figure out how they would win the war.
