Italy fulfilled their role in WW1 well, inflicting some 2.5 million casualties on the Central Powers and holding their own theater for nearly four years. The real LVP there was Romania. Their entrance opened up a huge flank in the Russian line and their quick defeat both boosted the morale of the Central Powers and got them a bunch of loot including grain and oil.

I think people are just projecting their perception on the 17th-19th century empire on the 20th century empire. Namely, its strength. Even the 19th century empire was considered a great power by most. The Ottoman Empire circa 1914 on the other hand was weak as fuck in every area, with a manpower pool and GDP about a quarter the size of Austria-Hungary's. More comparable to the collection of Balkan states aligned with the Entente than a major power like Italy.

Italy in 1914 was tied with Austria and Japan for the world's sixth largest economy (depends on what measurements you use) and was capable of mobilizing millions of equipped men to fight a modern war.
