Is communism American?

Kind of. American communes in the early 19th century borrowed extremely loosely from Christian themes in their inspiration, but they still were technically theocratic communes. The kind of godless mammon worshiping communism popularized by Marx that caught on in the latter half of the 19th century didn't really gain much ground here.

Also American communes were fundamentally different from the Communism we understand today in that there was no state involved at any point. In a group like say the Oneida Community you voluntarily moved in and subjected yourself and your family to the equal society with no state enforcement or coercion at any point.

>A program of eugenics, then known as stirpiculture,[22] was introduced in 1869.[23][24] It was a selective breeding program designed to create more perfect children.[25] Communitarians who wished to be parents would go before a committee to be matched based on their spiritual and moral qualities. 53 women and 38 men participated in this program, which necessitated the construction of a new wing of the Oneida Community Mansion House. The experiment yielded 58 children, nine of whom were fathered by Noyes.

Once children were weaned (usually at around the age of one) they were raised communally in the Children's Wing, or South Wing.[26] Their parents were allowed to visit, but if those in charge of the Children's Wing suspected a parent and child were bonding too closely, the community would enforce a period of separation.[27]

This is I think an interesting example pasted from wikipedia that illustrates the place US communes were in. On the one had they have an unironic eugenics program to create tangibly better people but on the other they are still trying to fully tear down the family unit.

They're both dehumanizing and life-denying.

Communism is a failed ideology and forever will be, it promises a utopia but instead delivers an Inferno.
