why is the invasion of sicily so underrated?

because the invasion of italy was a slow and difficult theater

the invasion of france is popular in the us because it was so massive. it is popular in england as its symbolic of them returning to fight again, like churchill said they would.

Africa & Italy are both underrated theaters of war. It showed that the western allies could kick Germany around before they even got into France.

Also, it tied up or killed several hundred thousand axis troops that couldn't be brought to defend Germany.

The main idea of invading the Balkans (Churchill's plan) was to prevent communist takeover after the war. Obviously, as we now know, only Greece was able to come out of their civil war as a democracy (with western help of course)

There were french Communist partisans fighting the German occupation in France, however it didn't mean that France became Communist after it's liberation. Normally, partisans were only put into positions of power if their cause aligned politically with the liberating nation, which is why Polish communist partisans were put into power but Poles who had fought for democracy were jailed and in some cases executed by the Soviets,

The terrain in Italy made the fighting slow and compartmentalized which prevented the kind of large definitive battles and displays of combined arms seen in other theaters. Tanks were useless except in small sections of open country and river crossings which were easily defended points of ambush. This also meant the mobility of American armor was much less of a factor than it would be in France. Shermans were essentially re-purposed as artillery batteries for much of the Italian campaign, something the tank did quite well but receives little credit for.

Italy was also where most Allied "war crimes" were committed, specifically the killing of prisoners.
