Missionaries were not usually the first to show. Explorers were. Explorers were followed by any number of people. In the Americas, it was usually hidalgos and missionaries at the same time. In Africa, it was either colonial companies or soldiers followed by the other. Colonists weren't always last, but they weren't usually first.
