How exactly did the British Empire lose all of it's colonies after world war 2.

This was one of the greatest empires, if not the greatest, in history...

What the fuck happened?

You can maintain them though but you'd lose them due to the place developing to the point they want to split form you completely because they know how gypped they are in their colony relationship with you.

Colonies grew up and started pushing back, and two successive World Wars pretty much bankrupted the British.
>>
>>2703119
Murrica insisted in Yalta. Btw under Soviet/communist influence, basically inside job.
>>
Colonies cost a lot of money that the British didn't have. Also the UN placed great importance on the self-determination of the nations and I don't think the British public particularly cared anymore.

You also have to keep in mind that the British people had just come out of a terrible war and many were living close to poverty and the money that would have gone to some shithole colony was better spent in things like the NHS and rebuilding the many cities and towns destroyed by the Germans.
>>
>>2703119
German chimp outs meant that Britain had to spend all its money on assuaging the tantrum in Europe instead of taking care of everything else
>>
>>2703119
Look at French Algeria. Even though the French technically won in a military sense, they had to pull out in the end, because the population still hated them and the colony had long become a net drain due to the expenditure required to keep it.

That was basically the situation the Brits were facing across the world. It didn't help that the USA and USSR were both focused on decolonization and heavily pressured the Brits on it. Both for ideological and economic reasons. Look at for example how the Americans withheld Marshal Plan aid from the Dutch until they agreed to stop their war in Indonesia.

Well you see they didn't give it up willingly , The situation that the British empire was in even before world war one , forced them to give up their colonies , how did this happen ? Well at that time The British empire wanted to grow even more but going at wars meant that many more men would die and a lot more treasure would be lost instead of gaining treasure , you see the countries like France , England , Portugal , suffered the most because of all the conflict at that time where France and Portugal fought and lost two conflicts each destroyed their economic status and The British empire already having lost a lot of men and treasure in the past conflicts could help but abandon the French and the Portugal colonies. The United Kingdom spun off the largest empire begin with the Indian subcontinent, then Palestine, Cyprus,Malta then Malaysia, West Africa, its colonies in the Caribbean. It was engaged in brutal conflicts in Malaya and Southern Africa which degenerated into civil wars. By 1980, with exception of certain islands in the New World, British Honduras, and scattered smaller territories, The United Kingdom was reduced to a shadow of its former self. And when in 1997 the UK was forced to surrender it's crown jewel of Hong Kong the British Empire started to perish faster than they built it up . The only remaining colony that the UK has is Scotland i think , but in no time even Scotland is gonna go it's own way . Well the European nations took a very hard beating in the second world war , it was impossible to retain the former colonies so The British Empire lost everything forcefully and now they just ghosts of their former selves , if only they had realized it earlier they would have been able to avoid a lot of bloodshed and lost treasures . I think the United states was the only country which got out of the British colonial game . ( Hope this answers your question )

Because the eternal Teuton had started 2 world wars

Propaganda used against hitler meant eugenics and racism were no longer as accepted
Cost to much to maintain
Why have an army stationed in every land when you can just extract the wealth via the """""common"""""wealth

After WW2 the end of the germanic threat meant there was less necessity to hold onto colonies, also nuclear weapons meant that holding colonies to prevent rival powers from taking them, increasing their resources and naval power was no longer necessary for national defence.

The representation of the people act 1918 and further universal suffrage changed the priorities of the government from colonialism to welfare.

The proliferation of arms increased the burden on defending colonies, the means accumulating power shifted from technology to manpower exemplified by Mao's "people's war" doctrine. Communists supplied guerrillas with ak47s and such, proto-islamists and various other groups emerged.

New technology meant that colonies were no longer dependent on specialized infrastructure and resources to facilitate trade and their economy.

If Britain hadn't been forced to give up the colonies, would be still be living under the same American hegemony today?
>>
It was never sustainable. The gap between primitive and civilized had shrunk too much. The AK-47 really fucked over the colonial powers, the Soviets mass exported them to third world countries. When it's spears vs machine guns a hundred men could hold off ten thousand. When it's machine gun vs machine gun the margins run far closer, even if you're well trained (note that this would backfire on the Soviet's faces around the time they invaded Afghanistan and the rebels shot back at them with their own AKs).

France tried to keep its colonies by war and suffered as a result.
>>
>>2703119
FDR did try to make it a stipulation of American involvement/assistance during WW2 but that doesn't mean the colonial powers didn't try. The Dutch had to get the British to reinstall them in Indonesia. The French asked the Japanese to 'hold the fort' in Vietnam until they could reestablish themselves. There were significant diplomatic conflicts between the US and France as a result of American refusal to assist them in doing so. America had ample air assets in the region but would only assist in the evacuation of French casualties, and even then did so in protest.

The allies were all pretty delusional after the war, be it the Europeans wishing to reclaim their colonies or America's expectations of turning China into a western-styled democracy.

There's no simple answer to the question. Logistically speaking the number of draftable men for the empire within the administered spheres (GB and the anglo parts of the commonwealth) was comparatively poor and this became evident in the first world war fairly quickly that during a serious prolonged conflict the empire was seriously depending on its colonies for major offensive actions during the battle of the somme without enough men working in service to cover logistics. They even got 150k Chinese just to fill the gaps.

It was also a maritime empire that relied on resources from abroad unlike its contemporaries it suffered from the immense challenge of keeping its global navy going. This is tricky when you're forced to give up the Suez canal and your ww1 disasters made your colonies de facto independent in 1932 against nations with multiple times your population and industrial capacity
