it's not a deflection - you have to determine what all these civilizations actually are in order to determine how and why they're "not atheist". the christian church was transformed into a roman institution, replacing the imperial cult but assuming its form and function, so western civilizations are actually pagan. why does our pagan civilization resist both atheism and authentic christianity?

Because religions has, in ancient and in recent times been a very strong force to unite a country. Whether believing in it or not, having a national religion that everyone identifies as strengthens the nation as a whole. Thus it was essential for almost all great civilizations to unite under a religion. I am an atheist but I can see the power religion has in uniting people and nations, even if you don't believe in the magical stories of the religion
