Because you're desperate, and if you keep your forces too close together, the other guy, who as you mentioned outnumbers you by almost two to one, will just send a force almost as big as your entire army around your flank to smother you.
Why was the battle named Cold Harbor?
probably because the northern generals were in their position because of cronyism and tenure and not based on merit, and the southern generals were vastly superior because they were passionate and fighting for a righteous cause and had vastly higher iqs than anyone above the mason dixon line, most likely as a result of them being nigger lovers and having mixed dna.
