Hi /his/, I'm doing a project on Slavic paganism and I'm having a terribly hard time finding legit sources for information.
I felt super lucky finding the book of Veles, until I learned it's a forgery and just written by someone in the 20th century.
I really want to learn about this, but not finding good resources is depressing. Any help is more than welcome. I can read Serbian, English and soon Latin ( in case that is of any help )
Pic related is painted by Alphonse Mucha ( google the slav epic if interested )

Here's a collection of texts on Slavic mythology but also other things like folklore, etymology and pre-Slavic influences which you may find interesting:

Serbian will help because not all texts are in English.

because there are no "legit sources" on par with Graeco-Roman or Germanic. Book of Veles is crap and unauthentic. To have formulated mythology you have to have either poets (like Greeks or Celts had) or written state ideology (like Japanese or Egyptians). Slavs had neither.

I'm pretty sure the only thing you need for mythology to emerge is a group of people. Humanity created myths to explain the world around them long before writing was invented. What I do agree with is that most sources are second-hand accounts along with other sources made through historical and ethnological research

The only source on the Slavic Paganism you can find is the folk lore to be honest.
You might have to rely a lot on archaeological evidence and such.
It's an interesting project, for sure. Are you sure Veles is a real forgery, and not just a compilation of sorts?

Trips of truth.
OP is going to have to rely on archaeology, folklore and some slight references in the literature of the time.
I could refer you to some Czech archaeological books on the matter, but they're not available in English.

mythology maybe existed, but wasn't propagated enough to survive
there were no poets to sing about is nor priests to write it down and keep for the future.
Also Christians weren't interested in keeping Slavic myths (as they did with Irish for example). So Slavs had myths - all cultures had - but they didn't survive

>Are you sure Veles is a real forgery
yes, it is a forgery
big stinking forgery from XIXth century
from my part I suggest to read some South Slavic tales about Kresnik - they survived and tell some good stories about vanquishing a sky dragon or rescuing princess. They have some backup from folklore songs.
Also there are reconstructions of myth about Jarilo and Morana, basically vegetation cycle of the year.

Myths were shared through word of mouth, as tha's how folklore works. And most Slavs may have been Christianised but many of their old beliefs were incorporated into their new religion with ease. A pantheon is not the only part of the religious experience, much of it is based on myth and ritual and those continued on under new names and with some modifications. When you find the time, scroll through some of the texts in >>2690511. It may not seem so at first, but many pre-Christian (hell, pre-Slavic even) aspects of culture/folklore remain to this day.
