Marx was a Young Hegelian in his youth and his own ideas sprang forth from criticism of Hegel.

Because it teaches you how to complete the mental gymnastics needed to justify being a communist as well as how to argue in such a way that others will find arguing with you like trying to nail jello to a wall.
You don't really need to "know" Hegel. You just need to know his dialectic, and that his dialectic was idealistic.
Marx however thought idealism was nonsensical and thought materialism was what really constrained society, hence he coined dialectical materialism, which is, ironically, not even a dialectic, it's simply a war between classes.

Ideas clash and create something new that doesn't contradict any of the previous ideas = Idealistic dialectics.
Socio-economic classes battle in society over resources and power(e.g workers vs.capitalists)and the battle creates new socio-economic conditions that favor the oppressed(e.g the workers) = Materialistic dialectic.
