tribalism

maybe start by looking at it from an anthropological/evolutionary perspective, and then more specifically at the history of germany since the middle ages with all its different little 'tribal' states. you might also want to look at the teachings of jesus in terms of overcoming the tribalism at the time and whether it was successful or not, and for what reasons.
