To be fair, Rhodesia isn't that bad. It was considered to be the only first world country in Africa despite sanctions from other countries and used to be called 'Bread Basket of Africa' until Mugabe took power.

First world countries don't have income disparities as big as Rhodesia had. Mugabe rule is still worse, though.

It was still a net exporter about 10 years into Mugabe's rule.
The early years of native rule were much better than Rhodesia had been. Education and living standards improved massively and racial tension was at an all time low. Things didn't start going badly until Mugabe (probably) embezzled the War Veterans' Fund and got rid of the Willing Seller, Willing Buyer clause in the land redistribution scheme
