Why isn't it illegal to lie?

What if you misunderstand a piece of information and pass it to someone else. Wouldn't that be a lie?

People don't even have to tell the truth, they should just have to perform due diligence whenver they make a statement (as is required when signing a business contract etc) - eliminate all bias, error, deceit, wishful thinking from your speech. If you can't do that then don't say something, or state that you haven't performed due diligence. The informational commons needs to be given protections from pseudoscience

A lie by definition is the intentional to deceive.

If you misunderstand a piece of information, then there is no intent to deceive or malice in your recollection of the information.

If I believed that I have only 2 apples in my fridge, and told someone to verify that, that's not a lie. Even if there's 1 or 5 or a billion apples in the fridge, its still not a lie.

Lying for financial/material gain is called a fraud and that is illegal. So what's your problem OP?
