2h swords? Maces? Am I anywhere near the ballpark?
Spear, easy to make easy to use, great effectiveness, great range. The majority of the battlefield deaths were due to spears. Next up are the axes

Probably one of the myriad different polearms around at the time.
It's relatively cheap to make, it have the reach and stabbing capacity of a spear, it can hook like an axe and have the killing power to kill a knight wearing plate armour. It's also great in formations.
Two handed swords were almost never used and when they were they seem to have mostly been ceremonial or used as a way for a small contingent of men to keep a more numerous throng at bay untill reinforcements could arrive to the spot. Some people claim they were also used to break up pike formations but I'm not too sure about that.

Yeah, watching people fight with claymores always looks cumbersome and awkward. They werent even used as swords really.
