While looking through some flags I've noticed that a lot of African and Slavic flags share the same colours.

What is the origin of this and are there other regional patterns like this?

Peter the Great's banner is the current Russian flag, inspired Slavs. Ethiopian Empire flag had green, gold, and red, and they were the only African state (forget about 1935-1941) to not get colonised, other African states, primarily West African ones would use those colours.

It might be a coincidence, but the Medieval Serbian flag was a Red on Blue flag, recorded in 1236, predating the Russian and Dutch flags.

for the slavic countries it comes from when one of the early russian tsars visited the netherlands reublic and he was so inspired by the country that he decided that red, blue, and white should be the flags representing the slavic people (russian empire). For the africans it comes from countries being inspired by ethiopia as it is a symbol for freedom and so they all take those colours.

And the flag of the Duchy of Carniola was originally white and blue, the red added later. As Carniola was the central Slovene duchy, the same flag became the Slovene national flag in 1848 (missing the Carniolan coat of arms).

Nordic Cross flags were based on the Dannebrog, the current flag of Denmark and one of the oldest continously used flags in the world.
It's an old Christian symbol and supposedly originated as the banner of the HRE during the crusades.

The Pan-African colors are inspired by the Ethiopian flag. Ethiopia was an inspiration for many African countries during the struggles for independence, since it had never been colonized by Europe, only occupied briefly by the Italians.
Many African flags also bear black (usually instead of gold) to symbolize the color of their people.
Red, green and gold are also the colors of the Rastafarian faith, since Ethiopia is sort of a promised land to them.

>The Pan-Arab colours are black, white, green, and red. Individually, each of the four Pan-Arab colours were intended to represent a certain Arab dynasty, or era.[3] The black was the colour of the banner of Muhammad and the Rashidun Caliphate; white was used by the Umayyad Caliphate; green was used by the Fatimid Caliphate; and red was the flag held by the Khawarij.[4] The four colours derived their potency from a verse by 14th century Iraqi poet Safi Al-Din Al-Hilli: « White are our acts, black our battles, green our fields, and red our swords ».[5]

>Pan-Arab colours were first combined in 1916 in the flag of the Arab Revolt.[6] Many current flags are based on Arab Revolt colours, such as the flags of Jordan, Kuwait, Palestine, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, and the United Arab Emirates,[7] and formerly in the flag of the brief six month union of the Arab Federation of Iraq and Jordan.
