What do you know about the history of political symbols and their meanings? (Flags, heraldry, colors, mascots, etc).
For example, red is associated with Socialism and Communism, yet it is also associated with the Republican Party and Trump Supporters. Blue is associated with the Democratic Party and Liberalism in the US, but is seen as the color of Conservatism elsewhere. Black is associated with both Anarchism and Fascism.

The Flag you posted outdates modern politics by several hundred years.

This can apply for historical politics as well, why did Appenzell go with this design? I think several other Swiss cantons used similar designs.

I know nothing about the colours, all I know about is the symbols for a couple of ideologies.

What symbols do you know the origins of?

The Fasce of fascists in Italy was an ancient roman weapon used for unprofessional soldiers.
The swastika was based off of a symbol used in India, which was where Hitler thought the Aryans originated from.
The communist hammer and sickle represent the factory laborers and farmers tha tmad eup the backbone of the communist supporters.

*fascus not fasce

No, only both Appenzells use the bear rampant. The reason for this is a legend involving Saint Gallus and a bear. Gallus was the local saint and founder of the nearby abbey of St. Gallen.

For a simplified bear, they sure wanted you to know that it was male. I think a few other Swiss cantons have coats of arms that feature animals with red penises.

>The bear of Appenzell is represented pizzled; omission of the bear's penis from the coat of arms of Appenzell was seen as a grave insult, notoriously, it had been forgotten by the printer of a calendar printed in Saint Gallen 1579, which brought Appenzell to the brink of war with Saint Gallen.
