there were tons of reformists throughout the centuries after the great schism. the church just got weaker and voices for reform got stronger. In retrospect, someone should've seen it coming.

The moral authority of the Catholic church was dead in the water after the War of the Eight Saints and the following Papal schism. It was out of this period that guys like John Wycliffe in England started advocating for vernacular Bibles and the abolition of the farce that papal supremacy had become.

Something about all of Europe being forced to take sides and taxed to the bone to pay for the holy crusade over whether the French or the Italian pope, elected by the same corrupt cardinals, would rule the church sapped it of a lot of its strength. Not to mention that the French pope had been morally compromised before his election as the man who brought Mongolian style slaughter to Italy at the head of a mercenary army.

After this the Catholic church no longer had the moral authority to contain the revivalist movements that had previously been funneled into orders.
