The thing you gotta remember is that the royal hotel is fucknormous. It's 120 floors. The clock tower looks as big as Big Ben but is actually vastly larger.

It makes itself, and everything around it look tiny and silly.

That includes the Kaaba, by the way.

Like, this is 4chan so you guys probably don't see that as a bad thing, but it's funny to me that the Saudis freak out about iconography impurifying Islam but then build this giant clock with their name on it towering over the Kaaba.

Tacky as shit.

They also bulldozed a bunch more because they need to fight iconography and idolatry.

Luckily they have their own name lit up in the dark, visible from 25 kilometers, so you know who to call if you find any iconography.

(They also passed a law recently saying all atheists are guilty of terrorism)
>>
>>266011
>>265961
He's right though, architecture criticism belongs on /i/ or /ic/. History and Humanities should only discuss the ideology of architecture, like why Brutalists reject the inherent devaluation of neo-capitalist forms of building.

>It makes itself, and everything around it look tiny and silly.
But that's what I like about it.
>>
>>268269
Holy shit, do they not have earth-moving technology there? Why don't they level everything before building?
>>
>>268338
Personally I think it would always look like an abandoned construction site because of its location. It reminds me of those copy-pasted suburbs in the deserts of the southwest. They look unfinished because they're out of place

Y'all mother fuckers will never be so blandly ugly and horrendously out of place that you'll have a law passed banning anything like you from ever being constructed again.
>>
>>268746
Modern architecture has been all about graphic design rather than building and designing things. I mean, basically from Beaux-Arts onward it's just been about making buildings look good from the outside around a box of steel frames. Almost nothing remains of the engineering part of architecture, which is why modern buildings fall to pieces after ten years.

>Second-ugliest building in the world
>Right after Boston city hall
That's hilarious. Seriously, fucking, hilarious. Like, I've been to Boston and the city hall looks like a horrific Brutalist monster raped an 18th-century American street. Surely other Brutalist buildings, like the Folsom Library (AKA the Parking Garage) are uglier, right?
>>
>>268417
One of the few bits of Brutalism I actually like. It looks interesting and the flats are laid out in a pretty cool and interesting way.
>>
>>269436
It's not actually Brutalist; that's like saying Jesuits are Catholic. The forms are too broken, the shape doesn't suggest purpose, and the melding of rooms defies the honesty of the materials by making them seem lighter than they are.
>>
>>266014
I like brutalism much more than shitty postmodernism, which unfortunatly dominates the american architecture.

It's the City Courthouse building in Buffalo, NY.
>>
>>274386
I still don't understand why all these bricks were placed there at random lengths sticking out. There used to be a brass facade over the hallways too, which had a similar style, but that at least was brass and didn't look too bad. But there's just no justification for this; it doesn't even provide the cooling effect of traditional Chinese construction techniques, where you'd have wood sticking out of the mud walls of your house to cool it in the drier areas like Sichuan.
>>
>>274450

That being said, I'm still posting a pic of an ugly modern architecture. The ugly architecture I'm referring to is the ugly-looking ski-jump-esque buliding on the right, and the clamshell sport-hall in the back. I am applying for jobs at the moment.
Occasionally, I come across a decent job, but it is in an area that look like your picture. Working/living in such an area is so off-putting.
And the strange thing is, local councils actually prefer those buildings. If you gave a typical Western 20th century council a choice to decide on a traditional building style or a modernist/brutalist style, to perform the same function (an office, say), they would choose the modernist style that many people find very distasteful. They would intentionally choose the uglier design, even though it hurts tourism - people visit places like Cambridge, not places like Bracknell (pic related); and it hurts employment as people don't want to move to a shithole for work.
Fortunately I've been offered a job in Cambridge which I'll probably take.
But the point is, if I want a nice place to live/work in the UK, I have very few choices. Most cities and towns have been covered in ugly tarmac and blighted with terrible buildings.

At least it will be a butt-ugly and completely out of place building collapsing this time.
And this time perhaps they will replace it with, I dunno, housing? You know, the one thing in Paris that no one wants to build yet everyone needs and that makes the city almost impossible to live in due to the prices and lack of new infrastructure

It was the first version of the modern Halles that collapsed, the Halles Baltard were too well built to collapse for structural reasons.

I don't think housing is necessary within Paris intramuros anymore, it is already one of the most if not the most dense city in the world. Improvement has to be made on public transportation in the suburbs as well as their urban design having to be reworked. Rebuilding the suburbs following an Haussmanian design and more classical building designs would double the metropolitan population at least.

My city's university has two faces.

On the one hand, we have the old part (for example the main library here) ...

Most of England is fucking ugly. When my mum moved there twenty years ago that's the first thing that struck her. The city centres of many towns have been completely gutted by postwar planners. I used to live in Exeter, and it always saddened me by what it once was. The 60s did far more damage to British
heritage than WWII.

I like all the blue and white glass. It makes me think of beaches, and it goes well with the grass/sky. It's also nice to look at because there's no distinct pattern or theme, so it's impossible to memorize.

>>

It makes sense in dense residential areas when the plastic or cover is not completely occlusive. it's a way to have some windows while making it harder to see from the outside in thus keeping a sense of privacy for hte person living inside.
That building's take on it is retarded though.

My college building used to be a cigarette factory.
As if that wasn't depressing enough in itself, they made it look like a square turd. I wish I had a picture that capture just how fucking hideous this place was. Even the inside was arse despite all the work done to it. Worst thing was, it's were the film, design and art courses are held, so there's generations of student films with little option other than to shoot horrible crap there.
