If it's against human nature then how come humans not only came up with the idea of it but liked it? Have you considered that interdependence and independence are both values humans can naturally develop that aren't entirely mutually exclusive?
1. People do not instinctively want to be a part of "something greater".
2. The difference between individualism and collectivism isn't the presence of social activity, its the question of the level of coercion used to gain that social activity.
If the society is primarily operated reciprocally, its displaying Individualism. If it is primarily operated through people being forced to cooperate by a powerful third party, it is more to collectivism.

Individualism is an Anglo meme. Anglos and by extension Americans often claim that western civilization is individualistic, but it really is just Anglos. Germans, Scandinavians or Italians are very collectivist in nature.
