Either named after their owner, or after a former president (Washington, Jackson, Jefferson etc) or the generic "Freeman". Contrast this to medieval England where non-serfs were often named Freeman or Fry while Bond indicated a bond servant - a serf.

I imagine they took the names of their masters, or the English names they were assigned.
