I heard that Paraguay lost like 70% of their male population in the war.

How did they come back from that? Did Paraguay go full harem-anime?
>>
No, the population didn't start increasing again for a long time.
>>
>>2645873
It went from the undisputed continental power and coming Global Superpower to one of the most irrelevant and forgettable nations ever.

So no, they didnt come back
>>
Would have been awesome to be one the 20 something year old men who survived
>>
>>2645873
>Los porcentajes más altos hablan de una mortandad total de un 80% para toda la población, quedando un hombre por cada 28 mujeres.222

>Finalmente la población paraguaya logró recuperarse gracias al concubinato y a una poliginia de facto, que se hizo muy frecuente en la sociedad.

oh boy
>>
>>2647414
What does this mean in a real language?
>>
>>2645873
>Did Paraguay go full harem-anime?
so says the legend but no serious source confirms it. they mention other more plausible factors like POWs and immigrants from Argentina

>>2646063
valew mano

>>2647414
wena papu

>>2647518
>the higher estimations talk about a total 80% mortality for all population, with one man for each 28 women
>finally, the paraguayan population began to recover thanks to concubinage and a factual polygyny, which became very frequent in society
ayyy soo very frequent
>>
>>2645873
Adult male population*
>>
>>2646063
Paraguay wasn't this developed at all. They just followed their dictator well enough to defy the disorganized and unwilling to fight local powers in a war that would end with them losing anyway.
>>
>>2647860
no, children too, directly (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Acosta_%C3%91u) or indirectly (cholera, infections, hunger...)
>>
>>2646063
That's a discredited meme. Paraguay was never anything more than an authoritarian shithole ruled by "enlightened" Jacobins. Because they wrote a lot about "progress" and "reason", socialist historians of the 20th century took them at face value and actually believed guys like Dr. Francia and Solano Lopez did good.

Modern Paraguay is much better, it's one of the most promising countries of South America. It has better future prospects than statists like Brazil and Argentina.
>>
>>2647920
No harems though
>>
>>2647920
>Modern Paraguay is much better
AHAHAHAHAHAHAH callate imbécil
>>
>>2647920

Paraguay is weird, I backpacked through there for bit. Culturally it is nothing like it's neighbors, very non-south American feeling.
>>
>>2647950
i know this is not /trv/ but do tell me:
1) how much bribe you had to pay to officers?
2) did you have a good local toke? :¬D
3) what do you mean by "non-South American"?
>>
>>2647920
Paraguayans are a wonderful people. They're proud of their country, but not in a agressive way. In fact they're very humble and friendly. The women are waifu material (hot and traditional). The men are pious and conservative. Their only problem is corruption, not some war fought over a century ago.
>>
>>2646063
>mfw anti-colonial butthurt made Brazilians invent a fantasy where Paraguay was a rising industrial power who rivalled Britain and France, who caused and manipulated the war to destroy Paraguay
They taught us this crap unironically. This and "Britain wanted to abolish slavery because they wanted a larger consumer market".
>>
>>2648225
The effects of a war this destructive is very long-lasting. They were already poor and just became devastated and even poorer. A thing much smaller (in comparison) happened to the Confederate States in America and these are the poorest ones till nowadays.

>>2648304

My leftist teachers in a federal public school in Rio taught me otherwise like 3 years ago. I think I can say this bullshit is now only in the past or in the minds of very poorly prepared teachers, whom aren't as common as one might think looking at the chaotic situation of our institutions.
>>
>>2647979

1) how much bribe you had to pay to officers?

Never paid any bribes that I remember, maybe one leaving the country over some bs visa nonsense?.
But ymmv b/c even though I'm white I don't act or dress like most of the degenerate backpacker types who shit up hostels. Most people assumed I was some sort of business type I think and left me alone.

2) did you have a good local toke? :¬D

No. I honestly didn't really party much at all while I was there, the nightlife scene is pretty low-key/tame (compared to Brasil anyway) and I despise the pretentious /trv/ types. I had some decent local beer and terere (spelling?) with some locals who wanted to practice their English with me. Not a huge drug scene overall, which was actually refreshing after coming from Brasil where every 10 year old street kid is offering to sell you coke and their ass

3) what do you mean by "non-South American"?

Hard to explain. Spanish isn't the only language, the locals mostly speech guarani (native language) which definitely affects the culture somewhat. In general, people are more quiet, reserved. Sort of "traditional" I guess you might say (kinda reminded me of parts of rural SEA a bit). People are also a lot less apathetic about the country/future than they are in Chile or Argentina which was nice, hearing how "nothing changes" gets tiring after awhile.

That's just my anecdotal experience as a gringo travelling around and working remotely though, I'm not an expert on the place by any means. fwiw

>They were already poor
ayyy lmao

>>2648442
>Most people assumed I was some sort of business type I think and left me alone
odd, those are the ones that get scammed the most. though i supposed you posed an image of respect and CIA-ness wahaha
>the nightlife scene is pretty low-key/tame and not a huge drug scene overall
i see. yeah the drug scene is very underground of sorts. you have to get connecting people because most normies aren't into that
but since paraguayan marihuana is one of the continent's most famous (and not even very good, i'm not afraid to admit), i thought you'd try some lol
>terere (spelling?)
is good
>Spanish isn't the only language, the locals mostly speech guarani (native language) which definitely affects the culture somewhat
good observation. oh yes, "tereré" is guaraní as well
>hearing how "nothing changes" gets tiring after awhile
hey but that's true, nothing ever changes

O Colégio Pedro II não é mais uma escola, é um centro de doutrinação comunista.

Digo isso como ex-aluno. Aquilo virou uma merda inacreditável. Só Napalm salva.
>>
>>2648491

>though i supposed you posed an image of respect and CIA-ness wahaha

lol maybe. Mostly I think it's just that I've traveled around enough to not really put myself in situations to get scammed. I'm sure I payed a little more for stuff than locals, but an extra buck or two is nbd to me, I don't even really think about it

>i see. yeah the drug scene is very underground of sorts. you have to get connecting people because most normies aren't into that

Born and based out of Colorado so top shelf weed isn't anything special to me, plus I generally don't like dealing with drug/prostitution/illicit type shit over seas as a foreigner, good way to get yourself in trouble ime

Sorry if speaking English is mandatory, but this discussion really doesn't matter to foreigners.

>Britain wanted to abolish slavery because they wanted a larger consumer market

That's true though. One of many reasons.
>>
>>2648704
British vessels were the largest party transporting blacks through the Atlantic by the 18th and 19th centuries. Abolishing slavery only made they lose money, creating no market at all, given the low socioeconomic profile of the ex-slaves, that the blacks in America retain till nowadays. The main theory on this policies change relies on "change of zeitgeist" and "fight against slave traders in Africa to begin colonization there" to explain the process.
>>
>>2648777
>British vessels were the largest party transporting blacks through the Atlantic
were they? i thought the bulk of the business was handled by the portuguese
>>
>>2648997
Only in the beginning. Given the dramatic rise in the slave trade in the Atlantic ocean, the English have been the largest traders in History , in absolute numbers.
>>
>>2648997
(continuing my last comment) This is a very good site with very complete info on the Atlantic Slave Trade throughout history: http://www.slavevoyages.org/

If you look in the tables, you can see the rise of the English and decline of the Portuguese in transporting and embarking blacks to America as time passes. Also, the absolute numbers grow, making the former the biggest slave traders in this process.
