Except the Aboriginies were pretty much all isolated from each other by the large deserts of Australia. Zealandian geography would have been much easier to traval between making civilizations easier to form. Not to mention maori had advanced naval technology and knew how to cultivate. All it took were for some inland tribes to begin large scale farming and boom, you have kingdoms.

The main thing preventing large, centralised Maori states was, in my opinion, the lack of mass yield crops. The key crop was kumara (sweet potato) but pre-European kumara were thin, finger-like things. Kumara is also very susceptible to the cold. This made Maori highly dependent on birds and seafood, so they were semi-itinerant, and while they were semi-itinerant an overlapping, fluid tribal system based on familial and land ties was much more efficient. You may think of fighting as being inter-tribal (and the bloodiest events were) but it was just as much about one subtribe exerting influence over another. Alliances and wars were fluid.

Lol what? The Maori are to NZ what the Native Americans are to the US, the last remnants of a forgotten past. We are probably considerably more inclusive to them than the way you guys treat your redskins (they aren't officially confined to reservations though they tend to stick together), but the Maori are in no way "based". They are overwhelming poorer, sicker, and less educated than nearly every other group on the islands. If the military and national sport teams weren't forced to preform the haka no one abroad would even know who the fuck they were.
