Castle of my city (Heidelberg)
Used to be the residence of the electoral count of the Palatinate region until the French destroyed it at the end of the 17th century
In the old part of the city, wherever you look up, the castle towers over you

Been there, amazing place!
Onto the topic: Kipilovo Fortress, V-VI Century Byzantine Fortress in the Balkan mountain guarding one of the passes. Changed hands Bulgarians took it from the Byzantines in the 8th Century, stayed Bulgarian until the Byzantines conquered all of Bulgaria in the 11th century, then became Bulgarian again in the 12th until the Ottomans came fucked shit up and fell into obscurity in the beginning of the 15th century. It's out of the sight and out of mind, amazing place to find while you are hiking in the mountains.

Thankfully the retardation of the Bulgarian government of restoring castle ruins extends only to those situated inside of the main cities, so there are still plenty of gems like this one to be found in the wilderness. It's really something to actually touch Byzantine masonry and mortar from the VIth century.
