Why was the USSR so far ahead of the rest of the world in tank development and construction (especially in numbers) in the 30s and 40s?

USSR was ahead in tank development in 2 periods: the 1930s and 1950s-60s. Other than that they were got really bad behind, and Russian tanks still are a mess
As for why, in the 1930s the USSR was leading technologically in most military fields thanks to some rather brilliant developers and lots of funding going to the army. Stalin's purges hindered further developments badly
In the 50s-60s period it was drawn from the experience from WW2, an experience that was obsolete by the mid-Cold War. This is why Soviet style fast expendable tank swarms get BTFO so bad now

It's not hard if you spend 80% of your GDP on the military and let people live like animals.

Importing and reverse engineering foreign tanks.
Bt5 for instance was based off tanks designed for the US army that were later exported to the Soviet Union.
The ussr was great at reverse engineering things.

meme, 10 to 20 percent went ti the military industrial complex, and the us wasn't too far behind during the cold war
Soviet gdp per capita was alright, 5600 in 1979, comparable to most of europe, higher than greece or italy iirc, the netherlands had 8600, belgium in the 6000s, britain too. planned economy just unraveled with the shock theraphy in the 80s and became less efficient over time as they fell behind in information technology like computers

This basically sums up every high military spending nation in modern history. If your country spends more than 3% of its GDP on its military it's mad.

>USSR was ahead in tank development in 2 periods: the 1930s and 1950s-60s.
And the 1940s. German tank development was entirely reactions to Soviet leaps, and Western Allied development was reactions to German reactions.
