Just picked this up
What am I in for?
Reminder that Russian sources are bias and not reliable while German sources are better.
I enjoyed it, beevor has taken some criticism for being unreliable however. I'm not sure of the specifics, someone will be here shortly to remind us.

Well that sucks, don't want to be reading unreliable books, damn

It's a good book. And if you're bitching about unreliable sources you should probably be a little wary of some anonymous dude saying "I'm not sure of the specifics".

Again, I really enjoyed it. I'm just repeating what people told me when I mentioned it in another thread.

Beevor uses more German sources than Russian.

Good book. Beevor is a great writer, but don't expect it to be a comprehensive history. There is very little about the strategic aspects, decision making, or really anything other than the experience of the infantry. It's more of a soldier's memoir in that sense, lots of letters home and diary entries for example, but pulled from a ton of sources.
Still a very good book though.
great book, really fleshes out the eastern front.
while it's grimdark because
>eastern front
there's some humorous sections.
my favorite is the mock german notice about christmas being canceled because joseph was conscripted, mary joined the red cross, jesus was sent into the countryside, the three wise men couldnt come because they had no proof of aryan origin, the star was blacked out with the air raids, the shepards were made into sentries and the angels volunteered to be telephone operators.
