That's not particularly surprising. The US is full of that sort of thing with immigrants neither being American nor their native culture anymore. Happens the most with Mexicans, but it can happen with Europeans too (For instance, I knew a contractor who was originally from Glasgow who after living in the US for 25 years is considered a "yank" by his own family.).
