Japanese swordsmanship in that era was an interesting mix of old and new. While many of the traditional schools survived many military recruits had only passing familiarity with them.

Most young men had some experience with kendo, that is fighting with mock bamboo swords and armor. Originally this was done as a supplement to many kenjutsu schools but by WWII it had become a homogenized art of its own.

Unfortunately this had some draw backs, as the quick footwork, and snappy strikes of the bamboo sword fencing were often impractical for use of a real sword in the field. To that end the Toyama miltary academy developed a curriculum for its officers developed by some of the leading swordsmen of the time. the system they developed was called Gunto soho, or military sword method, and consisted of a series of simple solo cutting drills along with a series of paired kata against both sword and bayonet. Rather than traditional clothing trainees wore military kit. Today this system survives in part under various names such as toyama ryu and nakamura ryu.

While there was some sword fighing done, particularly in China and part of south east asia the sword was not a particularly useful side arm and yes it was often involved in some pretty nasty executions, even one of the leading swordsman of the war Nakamura Taisaburo characterized the sword play of the time as "satsujinken" murderous swordsmanship as apposed to "katsujinken" or swordsmanship used to protect or uplift life.

Nakamura was an interesting figure, he was a sword instructor in china and served in special assault unit which were charge the Chinese with swords drawn. After the war he modified the military system with his own ideas and took many westerners as students.

In general Japanese swordsmanship of the meiji to showa era was seen as being of a very high level by western observers,

however for the traditional Japanese schools the meiji revolution and the end of wwII had horrible effects. The sword arts nearly died after the sword ban act, and when they made a comeback there was strong government pressure for standardization so that kendo and jujutsu could be taught in schools. This caused the loss of even more styles as dojo stopped practicing their traditional kata and sparring and instead adopted the standardized practices of the butokukai.

The Showa era wartime government often forcefully recruited teachers of old schools to teach civilians to use simple weapons like bamboo spears in case of an invasion.

After the war there was a another period iof decline in sword arts and the post war standardized kendo was even less realistic than the prewar that preceded it, with narrower stances and even more snappy strikes.

Nip officers tend to only have swords because they were memeing themselves as new samurai due to being jacked up on ultranationalism. Prior 1930s, their swords resembled that of Europe's and were purely ceremonial. Meanwhile the above people tended to have experience on actually killing niggers with shorter weapons in trench fights.
