I don't know too much about it, I suppose they somehow got hold of one boat somehow and then just went wherever the wind took them, raided, walked home, and waited until they got hold of a new boat somehow to do it again.

Raiders from Estonia or Karelian isthmus burned down Sigtuna in 1100's. Ynglinga saga also claims that king Ingvar (in 700's) died in Estonia while trying to pacify pirates from Saaremaa that had been causing problems in his realm.
